4 ways to worship God besides music

Music by way of singing and playing instruments is only a small fraction of the true essence of worship. More than that, worship consists in living a lifestyle that pleases and honors God. This is not to discredit singing hymns of praise and worship to God because that also plays a vital role in the life of a believer.

But adoration goes beyond the songs we sing:

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

The glory of God must be the goal of everything we do. We can worship God even when we do not have a guitar or access to a playlist in iTunes.

Here are four ways to worship God, apart from singing songs or praises.

1. Give

Honor the Lord with your wealth,
with the firstfruits of all your crops;

Proverbs 3:9

Money has great purposes. One of them is the function of giving glory to God. Contrary to popular belief, money is not bad. We need money, but the love of money can get in the way. One way to bring glory to God through money is through the generous exercise of “giving.” When we give to the church, to the poor or to a brother or sister with the right attitude, we give glory and honor to God.

2. Administration

The wise store up choice food and olive oil,
but fools gulp theirs down.

Proverbs 21:20

We do not only worship God when we give away money and possessions. It is also in the way we make use of money for personal needs. Stewardship is simply applying wisdom, gratitude and godly character to the way we use our resources. When we manage our money, time and other resources well, we worship God through it.

3. Work

A vocation goes beyond just a means to provide and put food on a table. We can work as a form of worship to God. This happens when we do things excellently and with an attitude that goes with the following biblical passage:

But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

Deuteronomy 8:18

4. Service to others

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: β€˜It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Acts 20:35

When we serve others through ministry or simply by extending a helping hand, we give glory to God through our lives. The second major commandment is a call to love, serve and build a relationship with others.

Are our relationships a form of worship to God? When it comes to giving and serving rather than receiving, then we honor God in worship through our relationships.
